Brazil Becomes First Country to Restrict Conversion Therapy

The Brazilian Federal Council of Psychology issued Resolution 01/99, prohibiting licensed psychologists from offering 'gay cure' services, stating that homosexuality and bisexuality are not illnesses or deviations. This was one of the earliest formal actions worldwide against conversion therapy. Brazil's Federal Supreme Court affirmed the ban's legal enforceability in 2020.
