Church of England Votes to Bless Same-Sex Couples

After two days of debate, the General Synod voted to allow blessings for same-sex couples in civil marriages or partnerships, passing in all three houses (Bishops 36-4, Clergy 111-85, Laity 103-92). Same-sex marriage itself remains prohibited. The first blessings were given on 17 December 2023. The decision prompted 10 conservative Anglican provinces to declare 'impaired communion' with the Church of England.

A historic if compromise step for the established church, allowing pastoral recognition of same-sex relationships while maintaining the doctrinal ban on same-sex marriage.
